We bought an American Standard heat pump for our home 9 years ago and just started looking for a replacement, we know its coming soon. We will definitely buy AS again.

We have had excellent service by ALL-IN-ONE SERVICE here in Wilmington, NC. They have responded quickly and efficiently to every call. We had them replace our perfect 14 year old units with two high-end Standard heat pumps five years ago. The smaller unit has worked fine; the bigger unit has required service well over 100 times over the past five years with most of its components being replaced at least once including the compressor. Freon leaks are standard for American Standard, and the quality of this unit is obvious. We spent around $13,000 to replace a perfectly working if older system for what has become a service nightmare. Now we pay for a service contract and could not be more disgusted with a product. We are thinking of having the unit junked and replaced with a different brand. Standard should be paying nus for the inconvenience and we certainly should not be paying for a service contract. Buyer beware. I would never consider Standard (just another name for Trane to maintain exclusive area franchises) and am looking for something considerably more reliable. Standard should be avoided and the lack of quality controls (including Trane) should be publicized. Our coil now needs to be replaced again, a major job. While not a financial burden, it is clearly one more American Standard inconvenience. I would not take one of these units again for free. I haven’t mentioned how much greater my electric bill has been when the unit is operating inefficiently.

Compressor went out after 7 years of service. Cost to repair was more than half the price of a new higher SEER unit…
way to early in the game for this kind of repair. Our last Heat Pump lasted more than 16 years with no major issues.

System worked well for almost 6 years before the compressor needed replacement at a cost of nearly $1000.00. My last heat pump was original equipment and lasted over 16 years. System was professionally installed and I had a maintenance plan that cleaned/serviced and inspected twice a year. American Standard needs to provide a better warranty for their compressors if they are unreliable.

    • Dave says:

If it was professionally installed then you had a 10 year parts warranty on the whole unit, why didn’t you use it ?? 5 year out of the box and 10 year when you register it online. Just wondering..

I Have had nothing but problems with our system. We have spent $1000 On repairs for this defective system. We can not get anyone to call use or Update Our claims. We have our unit serviced 2 Times a year yet we have had 4 problems With this system in 4 years. I was told this was the best out there. I don’t understand why American Standard does not stand by their products. All I want is a functional heating and air system that I do not have to keep pouring money into it. American Standard PLEASE STAND BY YOUR PRODUCTS.

I have had a terrible experience with my original Carrier system. Ever since I installed my American Standard heat pump the system has been running great. The best part is the 30% savings on my heating/cooling costs!

Piece of junk. I replaced a 20+ year old Trane 3.5 ton unit with 4 ton Rheem. First three years were fine. I have now spent nearly 50% of the original installation cost in repairs above and beyond the costs covered by warranty. The unit seems to cool the house just fine except when it is low on refrigerant which happens about 1 -2 times a year. Sometimes a leak is found and repaired other times not.

Right now the unit will not turn the condenser fan on in heat cycle so the compressor runs forever without heating the house eventually forcing an auxiliary heat call and on come the electric resistance strips. I might as well have and electric furnace.

I can force a reset by turning the main breaker off at the electric panel and waiting 15 minutes for the compressor to settle then turning the breaker on. This works for variable amounts of time and a varying number of on off cycles.

Rheem has been less than helpful and is apparently no longer speaking to me. So on top of owning a lemon I have poor customer service. It is my intent to take my repair record when I attend home shows and pass it out to people at Rheem exhibits.

    Good Luck my Fellow Consumers.

Bought this unit 5 years and 60 days ago.
It took 2 units to get one to work, and now 60 days past warranty the main board went out. Buy a Lennox. Very poor quality control.

MY System is 26 months old, and going to cost me and addition high cost to replace an air handler coil located inside (close to $1000, and that is for labor alone 3 hrs 2 men, the warranty covers the $1,800 coil itself……..this seems to me to be just wrong. I am told by the techs that the TRANE coils are CRAP. COPPER BETTER THAN ALUMINUM, but both are pretty unreliable. I feel like I have been sold down the river. I fear that I could get stuck paying out 2/3 the cost of the purchase price every two years. This is just wrong! Heck I’m retired on a fixed income. My advice is stay away from TRANE/AMERICAN Standard.

Our AS heat pump is 10 years old. This past winter I noticed the electrical bill going up by perhaps 75$ and did not think too much about it. Had the service man come and finds out a capillary tube wore through and vented the R22 refrigerant along with the oil. The capillary tube might be fixable however running a length of time with out oil might be a risk. The unit worked great until now. From reading these horror storied, not interested in American Standard. Thanks everyone for the truth.

Our heat pump is 11 years old and we had the same experience with a recent spike in our electric bills. we found out that we also had a tube rub that caused all of the refrigerant to leak out. The tech said that to replace the refrigerant would cost $900 plus labor to repair the damaged tubing with no guarantee on how long the repair might last. He suggested that we should consider putting in a new unit. We are currently running in emergency heat mode. Currently trying to make a decision on the best unit/company to go with and wondering if any of the available units on the market today are any better than the others.

I had a new one just put in,14 seer American Standard.I am disappointed in the temp coming out of the vents, also it is very noisy at the return inlet. It has a constant variable hum coming fron the return. My father just put in a 14 seer Goodman that puts out air at 46 degrees, mine puts out about 56,and the inside temp of my house is 74,Big difference and tech that installed it says both issues are normal. If I had of known that I would have gone with the Goodman instead.Being that Trane makes American standard I thought that would be the best way to go.WRONG…Will never buy American Standard again

Based on my experience American Standard Platinum series is the biggest piece of garbage. I have had 2 compressors replaced in 5 months on a 4 year old system. The 3rd compressor is getting ready to fail now. At this point I have no heat or air. The installer / service provider has thrown their hands up and walked away stating they cannot determine the root cause and the compressors will continue to fail until the RC is addressed. What is the consumer supposed to do? Manufacturer nor the Installer backs the product. What does that tell you? It is pathetic a 4 year old system has had this range of problems. I have sunk $3000 into this system to keep it running. No more! If I cannot get their authorized dealer, who should be the technical experts on the system, to correct the problem then I have no choice but to replace it and you can bet it will not be an American Standard. I would avoid American Standard like the plague.
