My system was installed 7 Years ago and it has been a disaster. A few of the problem new compressor,new wiring harness. 2 A coils, new burner, new gas valve, replaced the original thermostat with a cheap one so I could not see all the faults, numerous leaks. The latest problem is that the breaker kept tripping and the last time I reset it the wire to the heat pump shorted out and melted the cable it could have burnt the house down.
The only reason I still have the unit is because I have a 10 Year parts and LABOUR warranty.
I have been trying to runout the warranty (only in spite) but with this last issue and the potential for a disaster I don’t know if I can wait.

York is the worst heat pump you can own due to Txv valve on outdoor coil locking up and causing compressor failure due to no low pressure switch . Beware of all brands made by York international

True I got mine on special, that is the reason I give price value a 4 stars but has for the rest after a year and a haft I had to change the compresser ok guarantee 10 years but not the repair time , so it was $850, work time and like I SAID not counting if the guaranteed compresser would of been finish .So for me York is really Witten YAAAARRRRRKKKKKK PLUS WHEN i put the heat on it sense cold air, so I put my Furness on and then the house warms up .So to me York is craps Satisfactions would be zerrrrrrooo0000000

4 ton heat pump failed 1 month after warranty expired, $3200 to repair for leaking rusted coils. When it fails next time, I’ll replace entire unit with Carrier or Trane depending on research.

Absolutely go geothermal. We are on our second geothermal unit after 18 years in our house and our new WaterFurnace Series 5 heats and cools the main 4000 sq ft of our house for less than $1k for the year. I’d never go back to conventional. Unfortunately, I have a traditional air-to-air heat pump for the top level of our house, and it’s just not cost effective to make it geothermal, but I’m very happy with geothermal on my main zone. They pay for themselves over the years.

(2) units – 3 ton and 4 ton that have given good service for 22 years. Limited service needed including coolant recharge and ice build up on 4 ton unit. Replacing these older units with 16 new York 16 seer units including digital thermostats that are more accurate than old mercury tilt controls. I built my home in NJ in 1993. It came with a York heat pump. It heated fairly well in the Winter and cooled very well in the Summer. I really never even had the regular service done. Other than a few minor repairs, it never gave me any trouble. Finally after twenty four years, I need to replace it. I definitely don’t have any complaints.I know that the new units are more efficient and I would recommend this brand of heat pump.

Our old heat pump had an electrical short much like you describe. Homeowners insurance paid to replace the entire unit less deductible. considered it a fire!
